How to Wash Organic Cotton Knits (and Keep Them Soft)

Organic cotton does not need to be babied, but it does reward a little consistency. The habits that keep a knit soft in month one are the same ones that keep it soft in month twelve.
Wash cold, on a gentle cycle. Heat is what breaks down natural fibres over time and sets stains permanently — a cold wash lifts everyday spit-up, food, and grass stains just as well without the wear.
Skip the fabric softener. It coats cotton fibres in a waxy film that actually makes them feel rougher over repeated washes. A cotton knit softens on its own, wash after wash, if you let it.
Tumble dry low, or better, dry flat. High heat is the fastest way to shrink a knit out of size and stiffen the yarn. If you are drying flat, reshape the garment while damp so seams and cuffs dry true.
Every piece we make is GOTS-certified organic cotton with flatlock seams built to survive this exact routine — the fabric is only ever going to get softer, not thinner.
